A Message from Principal Kami Tomberlain

Dear Pioneer families,

I hope that everyone is enjoying the summer!  It’s been extraordinarily busy here on campus and there’s much more to come.  I look forward to welcoming each of you to Cupertino High School in mid-August, whether you are a returning family or new to this community.  We’ll have a place for you!!

Construction:  The new building in the back of campus is being erected and we’re looking forward to occupying it mid-winter.  On the Stevens Creek end of campus, the shop-turned-tot-center is being revamped as a black box theater for our drama program.  The new facilities will include a classroom/performance space, extensive storage, as well as a tech area for building sets.  That new space will open in the fall, perhaps October.  Additionally, classrooms in the 100 building have been re-carpeted and new HVAC units were installed in the 800 wing.

Beginning of School:  Classes begin on August 14, 2017.  Juniors and seniors will have the opportunity to pick up their schedules, take school photos, and purchase ASB cards on August 7th; sophomores and freshmen will have that opportunity on August 8th.  Additionally, we’ll host a Tino Crew freshmen orientation on August 8th, with a Parent Crew orientation that evening.  Please make plans to attend if you are a new-to-Cupertino student and family.

Focus for 2017-18:  As always, we focus on high levels of learning for all students. Our classes are engaging and challenging—and we offer further supports for students who struggle.  Additionally, we are focused on student wellness.  We encourage all of our students to take care of themselves by getting sufficient sleep, eating well, and finding opportunities to play and laugh.  Our school mantra is Work Hard, Play Hard, and Be Kind.  In our efforts toward that final aspect of our mantra, this year we will also be focused on ensuring a safe, unbiased environment for all of our students.  We will be training students and staff members to “Speak Up at School” when they hear bullying, name-calling, identity-based stereotypes, or hateful language, either in person or on-line.  Parent education will be included as part of our PTSA meetings, among others. Our plan is to empower each of us with the tools to make Cupertino High School an even safer, more loving community.

Summer:  I hope that all of you are finding ways to rest and rejuvenate this summer, to read something wonderful, to learn something new and to get outside and enjoy our beautiful Bay Area.  My goals for the summer:  read several books; spend some days on the Northern California/Oregon coasts; practice meditation; enjoy time with family and friends.  You?

With Pioneer Pride,

Kami Tomberlain
