CHS Course Sequence

BUILDING A FOUR-YEAR PLAN 

Students and parents can be overwhelmed by the complexity of writing a high school plan. It is a daunting task. There are so many things to consider and so many unknowns. One thing that makes the four-year high school plan complicated is that many of you are really doing two things at the same time:

1. Completing high school graduation requirements

2. Completing college entrance requirements.  

To simplify this process let’s look at these two sets of requirements separately.  

 

 HIGH SCHOOL GRADUATION REQUIREMENTS

There are three things that you have to do to complete the high school graduation requirements:            

1. Earn 220 credits.            

2. Pass the California High School Exit Exam (CAHSEE)            

3. Complete specific courses (passing means a grade of D or higher).

COLLEGE ENTRANCE REQUIREMENTS

There are three things that you have to do to meet the minimum eligibility requirements for entrance into most four-year colleges (I will use the UC/CSU requirements):            

1. Take a college entrance test(s). Most colleges will accept either the SAT or the ACT.            

a. The SAT            

b. The ACT with Writing            

c. Subject Test – Required by the UC’s and very selective colleges.            

2. Earn a qualifying GPA. This varies from college to college.            

3. Complete specific courses (pass with a grade of C or higher).

BLANK HIGH SCHOOL AND COLLEGE COURSE WORK PLAN

Please note that the blank plan has links that will give you detailed explanations. Specifically, the subject area links will take you to a page that will give a detailed explanation of the requirements. Link to school’s Course Sequence Chart to explain the order in which courses are taken. Now it’s time to create your own, customized four-year plan.

1. Print out a blank four-year plan.

2. Fill in your course work.
